How To Choose A Blog Name (Or Generate Brilliant Blog Names)
Finding the perfect blog name idea should be easy; I will explain the tactics I have personally use and get a good result. Let’s dive in.
1. Outsource Thesaurus
Thesaurus has been a useful tool, boosting our vocabulary. It helps with synonyms, antonyms, and the meaning of words. It has many valuable features.
The feature to leverage is the “synonym,” put in a word and get multiple words in return with the same meaning. The idea is to find as many words as possible (related to your blogging niche).

It’s easy creating a blog name from the result. Example - dollforkids.com, kidsplayingthing.com, and so on. A little creativity with produce a fantastic result.
2. Spy Competitors’ Blog Names
This one is common; copying your competitors’ pattern of blog names is a no-brainer. It’s what many people do before starting a blog.
The best way to succeed in a business is by replicating a working strategy. You want your blog name to sound like that of the experts in your industry or field.
Here is how to do it!
List out the most performing blogs in your niche, filter and remain only the unique ones, then check their blog name patterns. Let’s say a blog in your niche is “namecheap.com,” you can steal the idea to create “NameOnBudget.com” - sounds cool.
3. Get Inspiration from Books
If you are like me, you love reading books. I enjoy reading because it helps to increase my knowledge. One of the best ways to create a list of brilliant blog names is by getting ideas from books.
When reading books, you doubtless discover some new word combinations that make sense and sounds appealing. As you discover one, write it down somewhere until you have a long list of blog name ideas you can leverage.
Now, Filter those words and see how you could best combine them to come up with a catchy blog name. You shouldn’t stress over this; it’s not a tedious task.
4. Create Mash-ups to get the Perfect Blog Name
The logic here is mixing 2 to 3 words to come up with something sweet and catchy. These words don’t necessarily need to be related to your business or niche.
Some real-life examples are Netflix (“Internet” and “Flicks“), Evernote (“Forever” and “Note“). I know this one requires high creativity. However, it’s easy if you calm down.
Gather a list of words you use every day, try mixing them to see if you can come up with a catchy brand name. If you spend 20 minutes doing this, you should be able to come up with 10 cute blog name ideas.
5. Use Abbreviations
You surely must have heard of CNN, NBC, and many more?. You know those are abbreviations, right?. Even when people don’t know the meaning of acronyms, they still find it appealing to hear.
The idea here is finding words to abbreviate. It could be your names, or words related to your business, or a combination of both.
For instance, - John Smiths wants to start a burger business, and he needs a domain name; he can generate many ideas through abbreviation. BWJ.com (Burger with John), JSB.com (John Smith’s Burger), and so on. A little creativity with set the ball rolling.
6. Initiate Blog Name Ideas with Your Name
This is trendy; almost every person starting a blog today is using their names. To be honest, the best domain name you ever want to use is your name.
Personal branding is essential; you need to build your name as an authority in your field or niche. It’s easy to achieve if your blog name is your name. You should initiate blog name ideas with your name.
It’s a no-brainer, your name, and surname - that’s all. Except you want to add a little spice, your names should form a cute blog name. However, if your names are popular, someone might have purchased a domain name with it already (Not rare).

Hi Folajomi,
Your blog name ideas are fantastic. When I started my blog, the name I wanted to use was taken. Then I played around and got Moss Media. However, as you stated, blog name initials, personal name combination and other work perfectly well. And the .com is not the only extension that cuts the ice. For example, mossmedia.com was taken, and I contacted the owner who asked for a $9,000 selling price. That was when I decided to go for a (.biz).
Nonetheless, I’m looking at setting up a new blog with either my initials or name combination.
Thank for the inclusion!

$9,000? That’s pretty expensive. I actually generate a list of brilliant blog names before settling for this one. I still wish I could change blog name now. One needs to settle down while choosing a blog name to avoid regret. Thanks, Moss.
Hi Folajomi, thanks so much for sharing about my blog name Inspire To Thrive. I thought of that many years ago when I was helping people with their websites and social media. I didn’t realize how far it would grow and the business would thrive on it’s own years later.
I met Blogging from Paradise around the same time I had begun my blogging journey and Ryan has inspired me along the way.
Thank you!
Stay well and be safe.
HI Lisa,
I really love your blog name, it’s well connected to your blog’s mission. I think we often neglect choosing a suitable blog name, we just rush to choose anything we like then wish we could change it later. Thanks for stopping by. Stay Safe
Hi Folajomi,
Thanks bro 🙂 I got a good one….for $14.99 LOL. Crazy how no one gobbled it up before me. BUT….1 day after I bought it in 2014, an Aussie travel blogger emailed me. He said he tried to buy it that day but I already purchased bloggingfromparadise dot com. Imagine that? I bought it in the nick of time because he tried grabbing it right after I nabbed it.
Smart tips here.
Ryan
Wow!
So many choices for beginners to pick a best and memorable name for their blogs. Highly recommended post in the space of blogging.
My question to you Folajomi - How did you come up with your blog name? Huge StepUp? When I saw this blog for the first time, movie called ‘step up’ popped up into my mind. Nevertheless, in no time, your blog has become a great resource for bloggers.
@Moss, $9,000 is eye-popping. Domain business of ‘buy-sell’ is tricky. When I was looking for a name for my blog, I even found the same or higher rates for some domains. Even these domain aggregators like Godaddy play the dirty game of buying and selling based on the searches. Anyhow, mossmedia.biz is what we are more attached to now.
Ryan’s blog is more unique too!
Today’s my first comment, enjoyed a lot, folajomi. Have a great day!
Hi Folajomi
Amazing post!
Even I did some brainstorming before purchasing my domain name and came up with BloggingBeats.
I will surely consider these tips as well in the future.
Thanks
